6. How do I compare running costs?
Add up energy, insurance and maintenance for a year. Use the same distance for all vehicles. The result depends on your habits: higher insurance or different charging prices may change the ranking.
Petrol, diesel and non-plug-in hybrid: annual kilometres ÷ 100 × consumption in L/100 km × fuel price per litre.
Electric: annual kilometres ÷ 100 × consumption in kWh/100 km × price per kWh.
Plug-in hybrid: split the distance between electricity and fuel using your percentage. Calculate each energy cost from its consumption and price, then add them together.
Annual cost = energy + insurance + maintenance. Divide by 12 for the monthly cost. Cost per 100 km also includes insurance and maintenance. Cumulative cost multiplies the annual cost by the number of years, with constant expenses and no added inflation or charging losses.
This estimate uses your running-cost inputs. It excludes purchase, depreciation, resale, financing, incentives and other expenses such as parking and tolls.
