How to calculate electricity costs from kWh
Use the electricity consumed in kWh over your chosen period and the price per kWh on your tariff. The calculator multiplies those figures; it does not measure an appliance’s energy use.
Formula
Cost (€) = energy used (kWh) × unit price (€/kWh)
Worked example
250 kWh × €0.25/kWh = €62.50.
The €0.25/kWh rate is an example assumption. This is the cost of the entered energy use only.
Assumptions and limits
- Standing charges and other fixed fees are not added. Taxes are included only if they are already part of the unit price you enter.
- For a tariff with more than one rate, calculate each portion of consumption separately and add the costs.
Common questions
What is the difference between kW and kWh?
kW measures power; kWh measures energy used. This calculator needs kWh. An appliance running at 1 kW for one hour uses 1 kWh.
How do I include peak and off-peak rates?
Calculate peak-time kWh at the peak rate and off-peak kWh at the off-peak rate. Add the two costs rather than applying one rate to all your consumption.
