Travel Time Calculator
Work out how long your journey will take using its distance in kilometres and your average speed. Add planned stops to include time off the road, then enter a departure time if you also want an estimated arrival time.
Your journey
Enter a realistic average speed for the whole journey, rather than the maximum speed limit.
Add up your planned stops. Leave blank if you do not want to include breaks.
Arrival uses the same local clock, without time zone or daylight saving changes.

Calculate travel time from distance and speed
Travel time = distance ÷ average speed
Divide distance by average speed to find the time spent moving. Kilometres divided by kilometres per hour gives hours. Convert the decimal part to minutes by multiplying it by 60, then add your planned break time to get the total journey duration.
For a 240 km journey at an average of 80 km/h, moving time is 3 hours. A 25 minute stop brings the total to 3 hours 25 minutes. Leaving at 09:15 gives an estimated arrival of 12:40.
This is an estimate based on the figures you enter. It does not find a route or check live traffic or weather. Use the distance along your intended route. Departure and arrival use the same time zone, with no daylight saving adjustments.
How long does it take to travel 100, 200 or 500 km?
How long is 100 km at an average speed of 80 km/h?
Allow 1 hour 15 minutes of moving time: 100 divided by 80 is 1.25 hours. That is 75 minutes, before adding any stops.
How long does a 200 km trip take at 100 km/h?
At that average speed, the journey takes 2 hours without breaks. Add a 20 minute stop and the total becomes 2 hours 20 minutes.
What is the travel time for 500 km at 90 km/h?
It is about 5 hours 33 minutes without stops. With 30 minutes of breaks, allow roughly 6 hours 3 minutes. Both figures are rounded to the nearest minute.
Travel time by distance and average speed
Times exclude stops and are rounded to the nearest minute. The speeds are calculation examples, not predictions for a particular road.
| Distance | 80 km/h | 100 km/h | 120 km/h |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 km | 38 min | 30 min | 25 min |
| 100 km | 1 h 15 min | 1 h | 50 min |
| 200 km | 2 h 30 min | 2 h | 1 h 40 min |
| 300 km | 3 h 45 min | 3 h | 2 h 30 min |
| 500 km | 6 h 15 min | 5 h | 4 h 10 min |
Travel time questions
Should I use the speed limit as my average speed?
Use an expected average for the whole journey while moving. Slower roads and junctions affect that figure, so a posted speed limit alone will not describe the whole trip.
How do I avoid counting stops twice?
When you enter break minutes separately, use an average speed that excludes those breaks. If your average already includes a stop, adding it again would overestimate the total time.
Can I use this for walking or cycling?
Yes. Enter the route distance and an average speed appropriate to your activity. Hills, terrain and transport mode are not modelled separately, so your chosen average must reflect the trip.
