Identify topsoil, recent fill, clay, wet areas, buried services and the natural direction of water flow. Seek professional advice for questionable ground or uncompacted fill.
Excavate to stable ground
Remove organic matter and loose soil. There is no universal excavation depth: it follows from the planned layers, finished level and bearing capacity of the ground.
The often-quoted depth of “about 150 mm” is a recommendation for some pedestal systems, not a rule suitable for every site.
Lay the geotextile

Unroll it over the prepared formation and use the overlaps stated in its data sheet. Turn it up neatly at the edges where the system requires it. Geotextile does not replace compaction or drainage.

Spread the specified aggregate in layers suitable for the compactor. Level and compact each layer, and restrain the edges to prevent sideways movement.

The base must carry water away from the building without low spots. Over concrete, clean the slab and check cracks, fall and available height before placing pedestals.
Falls of 1–2% appear in many installation guides. Use the value specified for the selected system and surface.
